'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' movie: Sequel to premiere in 2017 with possible crossovers between 'Guardians' and 'Avengers'

With Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" having taken over the box office last August by earning the top spot four times and becoming the highest-grossing domestic movie of the year, it is only natural that the film will be followed by a sequel.

It has been confirmed by the movie's director James Gunn at the recently concluded Dragoncon that "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is in the works and is set to premiere on July 28, 2017.

Gunn took to Twitter and posted the following statement in his official page: "Yes, I'm writing and directing the sequel to #GuardiansoftheGalaxy for theaters July 28 2017. But first go see the first one out next week!"

When asked about the upcoming installment, the director opened up about certain characters and appearances, such as Peter Quill to remain as the only Earthling in the story. Gunn also mentioned about more female characters from the Marvel universe to join the next film in the highly popular series.

While there have been speculations that Miss Marvel a.k.a Carol Danvers will join the next film, the 44-year-old filmmaker said that she will likely appear in Marvel movies, but he stated that there are many other female characters in the GotG comics and he wants to begin introducing them soon.

Dave Bautista's portrayal of his character, Drax the Destroyer, in the first film of the series has led to a renegotiation for the renewal of his contract with Marvel. While he will reprise his hardy role for the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2", the 45-year-old wrestler-turned-actor has reportedly been signed on to the "Avengers 3."

Meanwhile, it has been speculated that Drax will journey to Earth and battle it out with Thanos, who killed his family.

Gunn explained how living in the same universe created by Marvel will allow crossovers for the "Guardians" and the "Avengers."

With the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" slotted to air on the big screen in July 2017, there is plenty of time to await further details about Gunn's decisions when it comes to casting, characters, and storyline.
