When we ask ourselves, "What is God calling me to do?" we should take the matter very seriously. It should matter because God has indeed called us to do something that only we can do. The longer we walk with Jesus, the more we realise that we weren't just meant to lounge around but that we are called to do something that would glorify Him and advance His kingdom.
Why does calling matter to Christians? Because it is only in pursuing God's call for us that we see God move in our lives. Romans 8:28 says, "All things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose."
When we work for God's purpose, He moves, provides, protects and guides us. When we refuse to walk in His call and decide to do things on our own, we actually reject God and His presence in our life.
But so many believers today don't pursue God's call because they really aren't sure what it is. How do we know what Jesus has called us to do for Him? Ephesians 2:10 tells us, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
Here are some guide questions from the Scripture that can guide us into God's calling for us.
How deep is your relationship with Jesus?
It's been said that if you want to know the product more, you need to learn more about the maker. It's no different with us. Ephesians 2:10 says that we are created in Christ Jesus, which means that He is our origin, our source and our beginning. In Him alone do we find meaning and purpose.
It was through Jesus and by Jesus that we were made. He was there when we were formed. If you want to know who you are, you have to know Jesus more. As we grow more in our understanding of Jesus, we will consequently grow more in the understanding of why He brought us here into this world.
What are you good at?
We are God's workmanship created for good works. God calls us to do what we can and will do excellently. What are you good at? What are your gifts? When God puts a skill or talent in you, He puts it there for you to use and share, not to keep to yourself.
Who do you belong to?
So many people pursue a purpose, thinking that it's up to them and up to their preferences and desires. But Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are God's workmanship, not our own. 1 Corinthians 6:20 says, "For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."
While we may think that we lose ourselves more if we give up our own wants, it is actually in denying our own fleshly desires for fame, money, success and acknowledging that Jesus is in charge of our lives that we actually find freedom and meaning.
