HTC U updates: Upcoming smartphone to be called HTC U 11, to be launched on May 16

The recently released HTC U Ultra. There are reports that HTC will release another HTC U device within the same "U" family called the HTC U 11 on May 16. HTC

During the past weeks, there have been rumors and speculations about the new smartphone coming from HTC. It was initially code-named "Ocean," with assumptions that it will be simply referred to as HTC U ongoing. However, recent reports reveal that the upcoming device is going to be called HTC U 11.

On Friday, popular leakster Evan Blass from Venture Beat learned that the upcoming HTC flagship is going to be called HTC U 11. The numerical component of the smartphone implies that it is a successor of HTC 10, while the alphabet "U" means that the handset belongs to the same family of device launched earlier this year, HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play.

HTC U 11 is expected to be a premium smartphone, with Edge Sense as its unique feature. Earlier last week, HTC posted on its official Twitter account a teaser, which simply indicated, "squeeze for the brilliant U," along with a short clip that showed someone squeezing the device on its sides.

The Edge Sense features frame-embedded sensors that will enable the user to do several customizable actions such as swiping left and right or changing the volume while watching a video by squeezing the device.

As for other specifications, HTC U 11 is anticipated to be launched with a 5.5-inch screen with quad high-definition (QHD) display. It will most likely be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, along with possible options of 4 GB or 6 GB for its RAM. For its internal storage, 64 GB and 128 GB options are available, which can be further expanded through a microSD.

For its camera, it may carry 12-megapixel Sony IMX362 sensor on the back and a 16-megapixel IMX351 front sensor, which may imply that it is catered for people who love to take selfies.

The device will not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack because HTC replaced it with "a more superior audio quality," as indicated in the comments section of the social media post.

HTC U 11 will be launched on May 16.
