iPhone display screen rumors: Apple reportedly orders 100 million 5.5-inch AMOLED screen panels from Samsung

A recent report has indicated that Apple's iPhone will be shifting to AMOLED display screens by 2017. A source has tipped that an order has already been placed for 100 million pieces of 5.5-inch AMOLED screens from Samsung.

It has been rumored for a while that Apple will eventually be shifting from LCD screens to AMOLED screens for its devices, specifically its iPhones. This is said to be happening for the models to be released by 2018 at the earliest. This was even mentioned earlier by the respectable Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst. Later on Kuo also mentioned that the Cupertino-based tech giant will have an iPhone design revamp come next year, a new form factor design.

A Korean website reported that Apple and Samsung have forged a partnership and that the South Korean tech giant will supply the Cupertino-based tech company with around 100 million AMOLED displays. The delivery is also said to start by 2017, as 9To5Mac reported.

It added that the deal is placed at US$2.59 billion and will span three years. The contract is between Apple and Samsung Display, a member of Samsung Electronics Co.

If this news proves to be accurate, then next year's iPhone, the iPhone 7S Plus variant, will be sporting this new Samsung AMOLED display.

PhoneArena added that there were also several mobile display manufacturers that were linked to the rumored AMOLED display shift by Apple: JDI, AUO, LG, and Sharp. The last was purchased by Foxconn last month. Foxconn is also known to be a major supplier for Apple.

Currently, the Apple Watch is the only Apple device using an AMOLED display.

It is also not known if the future iPhones will remain to be flat or will feature curved screens. Consumers will have to wait to find out.

Neither Apple nor Samsung has confirmed any information with regard to the display order.
