Joyce Meyer says you can't be both selfish and happy at same time: 'God's love flows to us, but then it has to flow out of us'

There is absolutely no way people can be both selfish and happy at the same time. Popular Christian speaker and author Joyce Meyer believes that the more people think less of themselves and more of others, then the happier they'll be.

Meyer drove home this point during a recent guest sermon at Life.Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Mayer says there was a time when she was at a good place in her life because she did not have any financial issues and had a good husband and children as well. However, she was still unable to find happiness.

Because she was too focused thinking only of her own happiness, Meyer says she became miserable in the process. God spoke to her then and reprimanded her for being selfish, and Meyer strove to turn her life around. "It's just not possible to have yourself on your mind all the time and be happy," she says.

Meyer adds that sharing love to other people, especially those who are unlovable, is essential in the search for happiness. "Love is not a sermon, it's not a theory, it's not a book, it's how we treat people," she explains.

People who treat others lovingly should not expect anything in return, adds Meyer, because it is important to God for His children to be selfless. She says people need to think, "I'm doing this because I love God, and I'm doing this because I love you."

It might appear impossible to love a difficult person, but Meyer says Christians have God's love flowing through them. "God's love flows to us, it ministers to us, but then it has to flow out of us, otherwise it becomes like a stagnant pool of water and our lives just begin to stink," says Meyer.
