Lady Gaga is known for her highly stylised looks but she showed she was not afraid to show the real her with a makeup free selfie.

While most people spend ages getting the right angle, editing and adding filters before feeling able to go public with their photo, Lady Gaga seemed at ease in her own skin.

The controversial "Judas" singer shared the picture on her fan website under ARTPOP, the title of her forthcoming album.

The picture shows Lady Gaga without her usual dark eyebrows and her hair looking natural and swept round to one side of her face.

In a message alongside the picture, the singer, who calls herself Mother Monster, wrote: "Its a scary thing to revisit those things underneath, the pain in your past.  but all I found was raw passion.  I thought I was destroyed inside.  im just ready to fight.  start the music."

Gaga is not one to shy away from controversy, gaining notoriety for her infamous raw meat dress and mixed religious messaging.

Her latest music offering looks like it's going to be every bit as unique, as a leaked online video showed the singer licking the hand of an eerie creature.

In contrast to her barefaced selfie, she appears in the video with natural-looking makeup.

ARTPOP is the first album from the singer since 2011's Born This Way, when she upset Christians with the single release "Judas" and its accompanying music video.
