LG TV: New TV is just 4.8 mm thick - that's thinner than a smartphone

It was recently revealed that South Korean giant LG Electronics had successfully diminished the thickness of three of its TV models to 4.8 mm thick, which is almost 2 to 3 mm thinner than today's slimmest smartphone devices.

These TVs sport 55 inch Ultra OLED display screens and weigh about only 14 kilograms, making them very light, according to a report by Business Korea.

Last month, it was revealed that LG had plans to expand its OLED 4K resolution TV lineup in the South Korean market. In addition, LG also announced plans to invest about US$900 million in its new OLED plant that is expected to be built in South Korea.

Daily Mail UK reports that about two years from now, the new plant is expected to manufacture four times more display screens than today's plants. One of the largest smartphone makers in the world Samsung Electronics uses the flexibility of OLEDs on its smartphone products (AMOLED) such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

However, Samsung said it plans to "focus on ensuring internal stability", implying it will step aside from the TV market as of this time. Samsung's slimmest TV to date measures about 6 mm thick only.

On the other hand, Japanese giant Sony Corporation recently unveiled its own thin TV models as well, which are said to be about 4.9 mm thick, according to Business Korea.

Other innovative technologies by LG include a super thin "Wallpaper TV", which measures 1 mm thick and weighs about only 1.9 kilograms, according to Daily Mail UK. With this weight, the Wallpaper TV can hung on the wall by using only magnets.
