The pop star Adele has revealed she got ordained so she could officiate over the wedding of comedian Alan Carr to his now husband.

The news was first shared by Carr during an appearance on ITVs This Morning; he reported that his January wedding to partner Paul Drayton had taken place in the back garden of Adele's Los Angeles home, where she not only sang for the couple's first dance but presided over the ceremony.

Following the reveal, Adele posted on Instagram: 'Seeing as the cat's out the bag. I married two of my best friends in January. You know me any excuse to dress up... @chattyman #LoveisLove.' The caption accompanied a picture of the singer dressed in fine white vestments resembling ecclesiastical garb, though not clearly linked to any church denomination.

It's unknown, according to BBC News, how or through which institution Adele got ordained, though groups such as Universal Life Ministries and American Marriage Ministries enable quick and free ordination online – compared the several years it takes would-be ministers in mainstream Christian denominations.

'She did everything,' Carr said of the Tottenham-born performer, a long-time friend of the couple who also organised the food and floristry for the event. 'She is the kindest, most sweetest, loveliest person ever.'
