'Mafia 3' updates: New trailer showcases New Bordeaux

Mafia III 2K Games

2K Games has released a brand new trailer for "Mafia 3," the upcoming open-world game that is set in the city of New Bordeaux, New Orleans. The trailer reveals that there will be separate districts in New Bordeaux and that the developers have taken their favorite bits of New Orleans and merged them into a single city.

According to a report from PC Gamer, the city will have nine distinct districts. Each district will be remarkably different from the others and the trailer showcases a bayou, a business district, the docks, a sub-urban area and the downtown center where there are jazz bars and evening businesses.

The developers also explain in the trailer video that when each district is unlocked they will introduce brand new characters to the player and also reveal a different side to the Mafia's business. Where one section of the city might focus on the Mafia's armory, another might focus on their bars, hotels and other businesses that they extort from.

Pre-alpha footage of the game was also shown as well as concept art, showcasing the game will be very faithful to the historic depictions of New Orleans from the 1950s to the late 1960s, sprinkled with the developer's need for fictional points of reference.

Unlike previous games, "Mafia 3" will focus on Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran returning home. The Italian mob kills every member of the black mob, with Clay as the sole survivor, and the game will let players guide Clay in a mission of vengeance. Clay will form his own criminal organization that aims to take down the Italian Mafia.

This is a very different take as previous games allowed players to be a member of the Italian Mafia instead of fighting them.

"Mafia 3" will be released for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One this Oct. 7.
