Meryl Streep joins season 2 of HBO series 'Little Big Lies'

Consistent Oscars contender and "The Post" star Meryl Streep will be joining the cast of American television series "Big Little Lies." Streep will portray the role of Mary Louise Wright, mother of the deceased Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard) for the second season.

The showrunners did not provide much information about Streep's character other than she is the mother of Perry who died in season's 1 last episode. According to Variety, Mary Wright will come to Monterey to take care of her grandchildren and is out there searching for answers following the death of her son. In the final episode of season 1, Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) pushed Perry down the stairs, killing him for attacking Celeste (Nicole Kidman).

Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2019 with production to commence this spring.

Fans of the show went crazy after hearing the news, including "Pitch Perfect" star Ben Platt. The American actor tweeted, "Some memories are so visceral, you realize as they happen that they'll be with you forever. I'll always remember where I was when I heard about Meryl Streep joining Big Little Lies."

"Big Little Lies" star and executive producer Reese Whitherspoon also took it to social media to show her excitement for the news. Whiterspoon tweeted, "Beyond thrilled to have the one, the only, Meryl Streep joining the cast of #BLL for season 2. Get ready for more wines, secrets, and Big Little Lies, Monterey better watch out!!!"

The news about Streep's being part of the series comes after her record-breaking 21<sup>st Academy Awards nomination. Streep is up for the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for her role as Kay Graham in the political thriller film "The Post" starring another strong Oscars contender Tom Hanks.

Streep is up against Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Margot Robbie, and Saoirse Ronan for the prestigious award.
