'Metal Gear Solid 5' latest news: Explaining the purpose of Mother Base Coins

 Konami

In the lead-up to the release of "Metal Gear Solid 5," a lot of players were wary of microtransactions reportedly being made available for the game that could have threatened the integrity of accomplishments related to it.

Hardcore fans are routinely suspicious of any new mechanic that seemingly helps newbie players get ahead in any game, let alone one as meaningful and monumental as what is likely Hideo Kojima's last "Metal Gear" game.

In a recent article, the gaming website Polygon looks at what the microtransactions in "Metal Gear Solid 5" actually do and what impact they truly have.

The article focuses on the Mother Base Coins that players could purchase using real world money to use in one of the multiplayer modes of "Metal Gear Solid 5."

To be more specific, the Mother Base Coins are specifically designed for use in the game's Forward Operating Base mode. The coins themselves are to be used to build external bases, also known as Forward Operating Bases, in the aforementioned game mode.

By building the external bases, players will able to enhance their Mother Base even more in the game mode. It's worth noting that Konami has designed this mechanic in a way that the first Forward Operating Base can be constructed for free, but the ones after that will require the usage of Mother Base Coins.

It has also been reported that purchasing the coins can apparently help players in the single player campaign of "Metal Gear Solid 5" as well.

The Mother Base Coins can supposedly be acquired either through purchasing them or by earning them in the game.

In related news, Forbes reported that there is an Easter Egg inside "Metal Gear Solid 5" related to another Kojima project.

The project in question is none other than "P.T." — the would have been harbinger for the Kojima–Del Toro collaboration which would have been known as "Silent Hills." Information similar to an audio file found in "P.T." is relayed by the Easter Egg, which is a tape in "Metal Gear Solid 5."

Unfortunately, that Easter Egg may be the last fans ever see of either "P.T." or "Silent Hills" as both projects are no more.
