In Mexico's last game against Costa Rica last week they performed very poorly and they will want a much better showing this week against Honduras.

Fans had expected Mexico to come out fresh and alert, ready for the Gold Cup, after the team had rested most of their senior players from the Copa America 2015 competition so that they could be rested for the Gold Cup tournament.

But what fans saw last week was alarming, as the team looked flat, disjointed and were easily taken apart by Costa Rica. So bad was the performance that there was not much they could have learned from the performance other than the fact that they have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks if they are to compete for the Gold Cup title.

Honduras will be no slouches though, and they are expected to get through to the knock out stages of the Gold Cup. Mexico will have to be significantly better than they were last week if they are to avoid another bad result here today.

Things got worse than the result last week as well, as they lost Hector Moreno to injury, and he will now miss out on the entire Gold Cup tournament. That could have a big impact on the Mexican team in defense, and the other players will have to really be at their best to plug the gap left by Moreno.

One concern about Mexico's current predicament is that they still seem far from settled on a system and formation that suits them best. They have been testing things out, but clearly they are not working brilliantly given how badly they performed against Costa Rica.
