The Miami Dolphins went through their first roster cut and one of the notable players they parted ways with is veteran punter Brandon Fields who was with the team since getting drafted in 2007.
Fields was selected in the seventh round by the Dolphins eight years ago and in 2013 made it to his first and only Pro Bowl.
In a tweet, Fields announced his release saying, "I've enjoyed my past 8 years in Miami. Dolfans you are the best and thank you for your support. On to my next chapter!"
The 31-year-old has a total of 594 punts including 58 last season, averaging 46.8 yards per punt in his entire career in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dolphins.
"We just thought it was the best decision for the football team. Brandon has made a lot of valuable contributions, both on and off the field. He is a real professional, and we wish him the best," Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said about the decision, according to the team's website.
Replacing Fields is undrafted rookie from Tennessee, punter Matt Darr, who joined the Dolphins last May.
Philbin said the decision to choose Darr moving forward is because they believe he is the best option at punter for them this 2015.
"Coming here and having this opportunity was a thrill in itself for me and to be named the starter is something just unreal. And I'm extremely excited and looking forward to helping out this team win a lot of games," Darr said, according to the Dolphins' website.
He added that being the Dolphins' main punter was his goal and it is amazing to finally make it happen.
Along with Fields, running back Demitrius Bronson was also cut by Miami to trim the roster to 75 players.
The Dolphins will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. EST for their final preseason game. They will open the 2015 season on the road against the Washington Redskins.
