Microsoft to roll out new Fluent Design language along with Fall Creators update

Microsoft first revealed the new Fluent Design language earlier this year, giving a glimpse of the successor to Windows' current Metro design that featured tiles. While the design has yet to make it to Windows, an upcoming update to the operating system will roll out the new design across the platform.

The Fluent Design language will be part of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, which will be rolling out tomorrow. The design will not be giving a massive facelift to the current Windows aesthetic, but will focus more on smaller and more subtle inflections that would improve the operating system's look.

Microsoft also released a new video showcasing the new design language and the subtlety of the changes that it brings. The new design is focused on light, motion, depth, scale, and material.

The update will include the Acrylic transparency effect, which is a dense translucency that displays a blurred version of the content and colors behind window panels.

Another new addition will be Microsoft's Reveal feature. This reveals buttons and icons when the cursor hovers over certain elements containing them.

Only parts of the Fluent Design language will be implemented on the upcoming update. Following the Fall Creators Update, PC users can expect more elements of the Fluent Design language to arrive with subsequent updates. Microsoft is also expected to push the design language to other Windows-associated apps.

As part of Microsoft's dedication on improving the user interface of its products, it is also pushing a redesign to its Outlook app for both Windows and Mac systems. The redesign features more customization options for Outlook users, with a new custom ribbon that can be modified to fit their needs.

It has not been announced if the other apps in the Microsoft Office Suite will be getting a redesign.
