With days before the much awaited mega bout between World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez happens, the WBC has once again reiterated its earlier stance on the next mandatory challenger.
It is no secret that indirectly, Cotto and Alvarez have been avoiding a showdown with the Kazakh destroyer through logic and various forms of reason. And regardless of the cases they are trying to put up, WBC's Mauricio Sulaiman isn't listening and maintains that the winner will have to face the interim champion, Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin.
"We can confirm that the winner must face our interim champion, Golovkin," Sulaiman said via vivelohoy.com/deportes.
Golovkin has undoubtedly been daunting, something that has probably overwhelmed Cotto and Alvarez despite sounding off various clauses and things just to douse water on the plans of the WBC.
Alvarez says that he has no objection fighting Golovkin but that it should be at his weight class, 155 pounds. Golovkin fights at 160 pounds and reiterated that he will not trim down to the catchweight despite rants by Oscar De La Hoya that Triple G can easily slide down to that level.
For Cotto, he believes that Triple G has yet to reach his level and that he needs to build his profile more before the Puerto Rican pug considers a match with him.
So what would be the outcome in case Alvarez and/or Miguel Cotto refuse? Well, the easy answer is that they could be forced to surrender the belt and technically be branded as cowards from thereon by boxing pundits for avoiding a match with Triple G.
Considering how Golovkin has been running over his opponents, one cannot blame Cotto or Alvarez from wanting no piece of Triple G. He proved it last time out when he dismantled David Lemieux via eighth round technical knockout (TKO).
Aside from that, his 34–0 record with 31 KOs is indeed something that would be a cause of concern and either fighter is likely avoiding to be counted among the knocked out opponents of the Kazakh boxer.
