Mike Huckabee draws flak for saying that Obama will make Americans memorise Quran after Mali terror attack

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has stirred up some unrest on social media after he made a comment against President Barack Obama following the terrorist attack last Friday in the West African nation of Mali.

"After today's attack in Mali, the Obama-approved domestic anti-terror plan: Give up your guns and memorize a Koran verse," Huckabee writes on his Twitter page (@GovMikeHuckabee).

Gunmen coming from an Al Qaeda-affiliated group raided the Radisson Blu Hotel in the capital of Mali and killed 21 individuals, CNN earlier reported. Dozens were held hostage but the attackers reportedly freed hostages who were able to recite verses from the Quran.

Huckabee's controversial comment drew criticism from some netizens, who told him to stop with his tirades because he will never be seated in the White House.

"Really appealing (to) bottom of the barrel here, anybody who voted (for) u should be ashamed of themselves," someone writes.

Another Twitter user comments that the politician was "so unbelievably insensitive."

Huckabee made no apologies for his statement. He later detailed his plans on wiping off terrorism in America. "Time for a President who will act to protect Americans, not just talk & protect the image of Islam," he says.

The first thing he would do is to close the nation's borders instead of Guantanamo. Next, Huckabee will institute immediate moratorium on admission to persons from countries where there is strong presence of ISIS or Al-Qaeda. Then, he will build a coalition that will include NATO, Russia, as well as nations of the Middle East to aggressively destroy ISIS.

The nations who refuse to join the coalition will be sanctioned and isolated, said Huckabee. And finally, he will revoke the Iran nuclear deal that Obama initiated. "Radical Islamists-Sunni or Shia-are clear and present danger to civilisation," he said.

He added that Obama should resign from office if he has no plans to protect America. "President Obama declared that we had 'contained ISIS.' Yet a week ago, ISIS murdered 224 people aboard a Russian plane, and now Friday night, Paris was struck by a multi-layered attack that resulted in over 125 people murdered, many more wounded, and a world again left in shock. We are clearly not dealing with leashed animals or with a JV team. We're dealing with a threat to Western civilization," he said on his blog.
