Netflix will release a series based on the 1996 book written by former FBI special agent John Edward Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The series will be produced by Charlize Theron and directed by David Fincher.

"Mind Hunter" is among the list of series that Netflix will release this coming 2017, according to Cheat Sheet.

The "Mind Hunter" series is based on the book "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit," which revolved around Douglas and his 25-year career with the Investigative Support Unit where he hunted down notorious serial killers such as the Atlanta child murderer and Seattle's Green River killer.

Douglas used his ability to place himself in the shoes of the killer and the victims, which enabled him to create profiles and predict the killer's next move.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will follow the lives of two FBI agents in 1979 who analyze serial killers through interviews that help them catch murderers on the loose.

Holt McCallany has been cast to portray an inquisitive and forward-thinking detective named Bill Tench, while Jonathan Groff will play one of the special agents named Holden. "Fringe" star Anna Torv is also part of the "Mind Hunter" cast, who will portray a psychologist.

According to Deadline, the series is co-produced by Oscar award winner Charlize Theron. The book was originally brought to her by producer Jennifer Orme Erwin to be developed under HBO and Fox21. Alongside Theron will be "Gone Girl" director David Fincher, who is also producing and directing the show. Fincher has tapped award-winning British playwright and screenwriter Joe Penhall as the series writer.

The production team of "Mind Hunter" was seen last August in Tarentum, Pennsylvania shooting inside Becky Coy's eatery named Hometown Restaurant. Cars from the 1970s were parked alongside Fourth Avenue where the restaurant was located, while the inside of Hometown Restaurant was revamped with an old jukebox, retro utensils, and disco-themed decorations to match the 1970s era, according to Trib Live.

"Mind Hunter" is expected to premiere in 2017 on Netflix.
