A statue of Jesus Christ located inside a church in Mexico's state of Coahuila de Zaragoza has shocked thousands of people after a video supposedly of it opening its eyes went viral.

The eerie video, which was taken inside the Chapel of Saltillo, focused on the statue of Jesus while church service was ongoing in the background. Then, the figure seemed to come to life as it quickly opened its eyes then closed it again, according to the Mirror UK.

Paranormal invesitgators have tried to determine whether or not the video has been manipulated, or if the statue opening its eyes was merely an optical illusion.

The footage was taken in June, according to Elancasti.com.ar, but it was only made viral this week by Adimensional - a website that specialises in paranormal cases.

Even though several individuals have been calling the video showing a wide-eyed Jesus a fraud, Adimensional site manager and paranormal activity expert Ivan Escamilla said there isn't really anything "unusual" about the footage.

Escamilla added that more than 20 paranormal specialists, as well as priests, sculptors, editors and special effects designers, have spent hours analysing the footage, and they have found no evidence that supports the video has been doctored.

As for the church authorities under the Diocese of Saltillo, they have dismissed the footage and even refused to watch it.

There have also been other religious statues that have shown life-like abilities in the past. One such statue is that of the Virgin Mary in Fresno, California, which reportedly wept oily tears and smelled like roses.

The statue belongs to a woman named Maria Cardenas, who said she received it as a gift over a decade ago. She even placed a glass under the statue's chin to collect the tears, which she shared to visitors upon request.
