As NCIS nears the air date of its 14th season, more details are coming out about new cast members and the characters they will play.

Following the exit of Michael Weatherly who played Special Agent Tony DiNozzo in the first 13 seasons of the show to headline his own series, CBS added more characters to fill the vacancies in Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) team.

One of those cast members is Jennifer Esposito and during an interview, she shared that her character shares some history with the NCIS boss.

"There's some history... he knows her in the past," Esposito said, but refused to elaborate on what the connection that the characters have.

Esposito will give life to the character of Special Agent Alex Quinn, who refers eight agents to Gibbs' team which he will reject. She will reportedly shadow his team.

Wilmer Valderma, another new addition to the cast will play Special Agent Nick Torres, a former undercover agent who is used to working alone, but will be groomed by Gibbs to work with the team.

Valderama clarified in an interview that he will not be replacing the character of DiNozzo but rather be making his own mark in the team.

He also said that his character will also have a connection with Alex since she was the one who trained him to be an agent. However, there is also some history between their characters that will be revealed during the course of the season.

Meanwhile, the premiere is expected to welcome the new characters straight to where the action is.

"Gibbs' team investigates a car explosion that connects to NCIS Special Agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), who disappeared six months ago while undercover; Gibbs asks NCIS Special Agent Alex Quinn (Jennifer Esposito) to shadow his team after rejecting eight agents she referred for DiNozzo's vacated position. Duane Henry joins the cast as MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves," the synopsis read.

NCIS Season 14 returns to the CBS on September 20.
