Running back Montee Ball, who was waived by the Denver Broncos after two seasons, worked out for the defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots last Tuesday together with five other free agents.

Ball was the Broncos' second-round pick (58th overall) in the 2013 National Football League (NFL) Draft.

The 24-year-old running back played well in his rookie season having 120 carries for 559 yards and four touchdowns in 16 regular season games played.

But last season, Ball only played five games in the regular season and rushed for only 172 yards with one touchdown.

In the offseason and preseason, the Broncos had Ball as their number two running back until he fell in the depth chart behind  Ronnie Hillman, C.J. Anderson, and Juwan Thompson, according to ESPN.

Because of the demotion, the Broncos decided to part ways with the former Wisconsin Badger waiving him last Sept. 6.

Now, Ball is looking for another chance in his NFL career trying to join the Patriots.

NFL.com stated in their report that Ball working out for New England does not mean that he will be automatically signed to a contract.

Meanwhile, ESPN reported that along with Ball, free agents tight ends Brandon Bostick, Brian Leonhardt, and Konrad Reuland; quarterback Zac Dysert; and running back Darrin Reaves also worked out last Tuesday for the Pats.

If Ball did enough to get signed, he will be joining a group of Patriots running backs which include LeGarrette Blount, Dion Lewis, James White, and Brandon Bolden.

NFL.com suggested that if top running backs Blount and Lewis get injured, the Pats can have Ball as an "insurance."

New England is thriving this season trying to defend their Super Bowl championship and will be having their bye week in Week 4.

The Patriots are 3–0 so far defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in their season opener and followed it up with impressive victories against the Buffalo Bills and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
