"New Girl" is returning to the small screen for the final time next year. While FOX has yet to provide an exact release date for its last run, the showrunners already know how they want it to end, especially for the wisecracking character of Jake Johnson, Nick.

Nick has been in the sitcom since the beginning. Even though fans have seen him settle into adulthood alongside the other characters through the course of the series, showrunners, according to People's Choice, think his storyline still has some ways to go.

"Nick, as an example, has grown so much and gotten to a place where he's become sorta successful," executive producer Dave Finkel told Entertainment Weekly, adding, "He's the one character over the course of the series that I think required the most growth and where he is now is exciting, but I don't think we've mined as much as we could possibly mine out of it."

Unlike Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris), Johnson's character is still on the road to find the thing that he's been looking for professionally speaking, and for Finkel, "there's a lot of fun to be had there."

"New Girl" season 7 is set to feature a major time jump, picking up three years after the events of season 6 finale, so Nick's real adult lifestyle would indeed be an interesting thing to see. However, that is just one of the things in store for his character in the series finale.

The previous season saw Nick and Reagan's (Megan Fox) relationship finally come to an end, bringing up the idea of a new beginning for him and Jess' (Zooey Deschanel) potential romance in the future. Of course, everyone has to wait for season 7 to know what becomes of their relationship, but as far as Johnson is concerned, he thinks marriage will be their endgame.

Nick and Jess have been the series' one true pairing since the beginning, so it makes sense to see them marry before the curtains close.

Regardless, the "New Girl" series finale promises significant changes and achievements to Jess and the gang including "a big one" in the series finale." Whether or not Nick and Jess tie the knot in the end, they will still likely get the happy ending they deserve.
