The setbacks continue for the New York Jets as safety Antonio Allen suffered a torn Achilles tendon last Thursday during practice with the injury being confirmed Friday through a magnetic resonance imaging.
Allen, who was the seventh-round pick by the Jets in 2012 and is set to enter the final year of his current deal, will have to miss the entire 2015 season because of the injury.
ESPN reported that New York waived Allen with an injury designation, which means he will be on the injured reserve list once he clears waivers.
"That was a tough break for him. He was having a good camp," Jets head coach Todd Bowles said about Allen, according to ESPN.
Bowles praised Allen's work ethic in camp but added that what happened was a "freak accident" since there was no contact in the play where the 26-year-old suffered the injury.
In three seasons in the National Football League (NFL) all with the Jets, Allen played in a total of 38 career games.
Playing as a safety in his NFL career, Allen was assigned to play as cornerback last season under former head coach Rex Ryan because of the injuries the team suffered; and he started in eight games.
To take Allen's roster spot, New York signed cornerback Keon Lyn who played collegiate football in Syracuse.
But Allen is not the only player for the Jets who suffered an injury as Newsday.com reported that the team announced through Twitter cornerback Dee Milliner's wrist surgery after getting injured also during Thursday's practice.
Newsday.com added that New York's timetable for Milliner is six to eight weeks.
The 23-year-old cornerback who was a 2013 first-round pick by the Jets have had a long history of injuries and will go through his seventh surgery, according to the report.
These injuries are not helping the Jets as they try to have a better campaign next season after finishing last season with a 4–12 record, missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive time.
