Nintendo confirms release date of New 3DS XL SNES Edition

The New 3DS XL SNES Edition will arrive next month. Amazon

Retro gaming fans have more reason to rejoice, as Nintendo has confirmed that the New 3DS XL Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Edition will be arriving to the U.S. market next month. This is part of the company's retro-designed devices that taps into the nostalgia of long-time gamers.

The new device will be available exclusively on Amazon starting Nov. 27. Given the popularity of Nintendo consoles and its history of instantly selling out, players may want to pre-order the console to make sure they can get one.

The New 3DS XL SNES Edition retails for $200 and once the console is released, players will also get a downloadable copy of "Super Mario Kart" for free.

The SNES-themed New 3DS XL mimics the appearance of the early 90s home gaming console that became one of the most successful consoles of all time.

The top flap of the 3DS XL shows the retro console's power, reset, and eject button, while the bottom flap shows the cartridge slot. While the features are only cosmetic, the design will surely be a hit among die-hard gamers.

Earlier this year, Nintendo released the Super Famicom-themed New 3DS XL in Japan and Europe. The Super Famicom is the variant of the SNES which was released in the said regions in the 90s.

The release of the new edition of the 3DS XL means that Nintendo is intent on keeping its handheld consoles alive. The company has said that it will be supporting the 3DS XL even beyond 2018.

With the release of the Nintendo Switch, many handheld users feared that Nintendo may cutoff its support for handheld devices like the 3DS. This is because of the fact that the Switch is a hybrid console that can be used with a large television at home, or as a handheld device with its own display.
