Oculus Rift news: Facebook's VR headgear works with Windows PC, not with Apple machines

In a few weeks' time, people who pre-ordered the Oculus Rift in January will be having their VR gear. With this said, many will use it with high-end Windows-based machines. Some may even try it with a Mac. Unfortunately, the VR headgear will not work on Apple computers.

Palmer Luckey, Oculus VR founder, said in an interview with Shacknews that with the current specs of Apple machines out in the market, the Rift will not work on them.

"That is up to Apple. If they ever release a good computer, we will do it," he said.

"It just boils down to the fact that Apple doesn't prioritize high-end GPUs," he explained. "You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top of the line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn't match our recommended specs. So if they prioritize higher-end GPUs like they used to for a while back in the day, we'd love to support Mac. But right now, there's just not a single machine out there that supports it."

So even if Apple machines have fast processors, their GPUs will not be able to feed the requirements of the Oculus Rift.

Palmer was also asked about the pricing of the VR headgear, as some are saying that it is quite pricey. The Oculus Rift inventor explained that consumers will be getting a very good product for $600 and that there is really no income for them with the hardware. The headgear is expensive to make. Consumers win in this situation for they are getting more than what they paid for, like high-end optics, OLED displays, and a very precise tracking system.

The Oculus Rift is being offered at $599 USD and can be shipped to 20 countries and regions. The VR headgear will be coming with a sensor, a remote, cables and an Xbox One controller. Two VR games are also included in the package, "Eve: Valkyrie" and "Lucky's Tale." Current orders are expected to be shipped by July and are limited to one set per customer.
