During the screening of the second "Overlord" anime compilation movie "Overlord: Shikkoku no Senshi" ("Overlord: The Dark Warrior") which premiered in Japan last Feb. 25, the new season was announced.

Now, finally, a date has been set. On Sept. 28, the Yokohama Toranora bookshop showed off the cover of "Overlord" light novel Volume 12, and it revealed that the upcoming season of the anime adaptation is scheduled for release in January 2018.

Madhouse, the studio behind 2015 worldwide hit "One-Punch Man" is returning to animate "Overlord" second season. They also did the first season of the anime.

The first season which had 13 episodes opened in July 2015. Based on a fantasy light novel written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin, the story follows Momonga, one of the founding members of the famous guild Ainz Ooal Gown trapped in the virtual world of Yggdrasil. In the real world, Yggdrasil's servers had already shut down, and the game officially defunct. Yet, for reasons still unknown, Momonga is unable to leave the virtual reality game. He is then forced to "play" it, now with higher stakes since it is now his "reality." The original non-playable characters (NPC) of the game now seem to be more human (or whatever race they belong to) than before. With powerful weapons and abilities in his arsenal, Momonga strives to conquer Yggdrasil.

Kugane Maruyama published the original light novel series online in 2010, which then gained popularity and a following. By 2012, Kadokawa picked the series up and published it under their Enterbrain imprint, with so-bin doing the illustrations. Yen Press then became the official North American distributor of the light novel, and published the manga adaptation.

The "Overlord" compilation films included footage from the anime's first season, as well as new never-before seen scenes and so-bin's character design drafts for new characters that are expected to show up in the new season. There is no official news on which part of the light novel series will be adapted, but for now, it is assumed that the story will pick up where it left off.
