'Planetside 2' beta to launch Jan. 13 or 20 for PS4

The beta version of "Planetside 2" will go live on Jan. 13 or 20, according Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley.

In his Twitter account, Smedley announced, "It (PlanetSide 2's beta) was approved first pass and goes up either the week of the 13th or 20th. We will know when we are back on the 5th"

It is still undisclosed, however, as to how one can obtain the beta version of the game. The president said that more information will be revealed on Jan. 5 for those who want to get their hands on the beta version. Meanwhile, players can sign up for "Planetside 2's" beta at the game's official website.

Originally, the beta version for PlayStation 4 was meant for release in 2014, previously thought to happen on Dec. 31, which apparently did not happen. The PS4 version is now long overdue since the PC version was launched two years ago.

"As much as it sounds like we're blowing smoke, we're working hard to release a game that feels like a full-on console experience and not just like a port. So, it's taken us quite a long time to re-jigger our user interface and our controls. There's a lot that needs to get done," creative director Matt Higby said in November.

"Planetside 2" is a Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play massively multiplayer online first-person shooter game. It is the sequel to the original "Planetside" game that was released in 2003. The PC version of "Planetside 2" was released on Nov. 20, 2012.

"Planetside 2" was officially announced at the Sony Fan Fair on July 7, 2011. The sequel makes use of a new game engine that supports a large number of players in continuous large scale conflict. Similar to the game's first installment, "PlanetSide 2" follows the efforts of three factions as they fight for territorial control of the planet Auraxis.
