Princess Charlotte will be christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby on July 5, Kensington Palace announced today.

The daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was born on May 2 at St Mary's Hospital in London weighing 8lbs 3oz (3.7kg). Her full name was later announced as Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge.

The Christening service will be held at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Queen's estate at Sandringham in Norfolk. Her godparents have not yet been announced.

William and Kate have been living at Amner Hall on the Sandringham estate since they left London shortly after Charlotte's birth. They are expected to live there for the next few years, while the children are still young.

Archbishop Welby also christened Prince George, who is almost two years old, on October 23, 2013. It was a small, private ceremony at the Chapel Royal at St James' Palace, with 22 guests, including his seven godparents.

At the time he spoke about the significance of the service and said: "Baptism is at its heart about the gift of God, about God's gift of life – just ordinary physical life, but also the offer of spiritual life to all of us, of life forever.

"All through Christian history, for 2000 years, being baptised meant you joined the family of the Church. And that's what it means today. What a family!"
