"Reign" is about to return to The CW this fall, and fans of the period drama are expecting more juicy storylines, conflict, and romance in season 3. While very little has been revealed about the show, casting news hint at new characters who are about to cause some intrigue and scandal in its third season.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the series is getting ready to cast the role of an English Ambassador to France. The website adds that this person could turn out to be a spy, which could spell trouble for everyone in France.

Meanwhile, according to a new report from E! News, the series is looking for someone to play the role of Martin, described as a "sexy pirate" who is going to make his presence felt and "shake things up" in court. The pirate's ultimate goal is to meet highborn ladies, although he will reportedly claim that he's looking for a bride.

SpoilerTV reports that a major recasting is in the cards for season 3. The show is reportedly looking for a new actor to play Charles IX of France. The recast suggests that the character will be a more important presence in the upcoming season. Charles is next in line to the throne of France and is described as a mischievous "party-boy" who recently returned to be taught by Francis.

Aside from Charles, the website reports that the show is looking to cast Robert Dudley, a favorite of Elizabeth and who has known her since they were children. The character is said to know Elizabeth's deepest, darkest secrets and vice versa. The series is also looking for someone to play Amy Dudley, Robert's wife, who will be concerned about their marriage as rumors suggest that Robert and Elizabeth's relationship is more than mere friendship.

"Reign" premieres its third season on Friday, Oct. 9, on The CW.
