Samsung Galaxy S6: Smartphone to feature foldable screen and full metal body?

Samsung Galaxy S5 (pictured) - will its successor, the Galaxy S6, have a foldable and flexible screen display?

Samsung's next smartphone, the Galaxy S6, will reportedly be another breakthrough in the mobile phone industry.

For one, rumors are saying that the S6 will pack a foldable screen display. This speculation stems from reports that the South Korean tech giant is currently working on the curved display, first seen in the Galaxy Note Edge, to make it foldable and more flexible.

Samsung's vice president of business strategic team Lee Chang-hoon revealed this piece of information to investors, although he clarified that the foldable screen is not yet finalized.  This suggests  that the feature is already in the works and could already be in the final stages of development.

Second, there are whispers that the upcoming Galaxy S6 will be sturdier, thanks to its full metal body, which Samsung showed off in the Galaxy Alpha handset. This will also give the upcoming smartphone a sleek and sophisticated appearance compared to the plastic covering of the previous models in the Galaxy S series.

Third, aside from a new screen display and casing, it is said that the smartphone will also pack a high speed storage system dubbed as UFS. This is set to replace the internal and external memory cards of the current Samsung devices.

Although Samsung has not announced the official specs and features of the upcoming handset yet, other rumored Samsung Galaxy S6 features are:

  • Same screen size with 4K pixels screen display
  • Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 21-megapixel back camera and 6-megapixel front-facing camera with full HD capture
  • 4000 mAh battery with like ultra-battery saver mode feature

Based on previous releases of the Samsung Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S6 is expected to be announced in early 2015, most probably a day before the Mobile World Congress tech event in Barcelona set to kick off on March 2. The device will then hit the shelves of carriers and retailers a month later.

Meanwhile, Samsung is reportedly trimming its smartphone production by one-third as a cost-cutting measure and to avoid flooding the market with too many new devices.

All these should be taken with a grain of salt as Samsung has not commented on the rumors surrounding the Galaxy S6 and has not released its roadmap for next year.
