"Sniper Elite 4," the third-person tactical shooter game set in World War II Europe, is set to be released this year, and game developer Rebellion has released the official teaser trailer to let gamers catch a glimpse of what this new installment in the "Sniper Elite" series has to offer.
The video showcases a town in Italy, the streets of which look deserted, with the only sign of life coming from the sound and shadows of planes overhead. Tables, chairs, barrels and other outdoor items are left overturned. There is a shot of a megaphone through which an announcement is being made, then that of shadows of soldiers on the move, a tank, a convoy of trucks, and a sky full of low-flying planes that give the ominous feeling of military occupation. The camera then moves back from the cobbled roads to the woods in the outskirts of town. The clip ends with the sound of a sniper rifle being cocked.
That sniper is the role the players of the game will have to take on.
As explained on the "Sniper Elite 4" website, "Covert agent and elite marksman Karl Fairburne must fight alongside the brave men and women of the Italian Resistance to help free their country from the yoke of Fascism, and defeat a terrifying new threat with the potential to halt the Allied fightback in Europe before it's even begun."
The success of the Allied Forces relies on the success of this mission.
"Sniper Elite 4" is set in 1943 after the events in "Sniper Elite 3." This upcoming game offers maps that are far bigger than the previous installment, promising hours of gameplay. Jason Kingsley, the creative director and co-founder of Rebellion, said in a post on the PlayStation blog that the town shown in the video, the same one that players will see in the game, is just a small portion of one region. What's more, that particular area can be found somewhere in the game's early levels, meaning more challenging environments await gamers.
And to excite gamers, Kingsley said, pertaining to the video, "Did you spot Karl right at the end? Well done if you did — he's definitely dwarfed by his surroundings!"
There are multiplayer options as well as campaigns that can be played solo or with a companion. Kingsley said that more details will be made available soon.
"Sniper Elite 4" is set to be released this year for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
