"Spawn" could be making a comeback in different mediums as creator Todd McFarlane is set to bring back the cult anti-hero.

After years of speculation, McFarlane announced that he will be writing and directing an upcoming "Spawn" movie. Speaking with Screen Geek, McFarlane also hinted that a "Spawn" animation could be in the pipeline as well.

"I'm going to get the ['Spawn'] movie out and then we still have the rights for TV and animation and we'll just figure it out. I've also got to figure how to get Keith David in my movie, too. Just one line," he told the publication.

Since the launch of McFarlane's "Spawn" in 1992, which was published by Image Comics, the comic book character has been an enduring hit. Blending horror and supernatural elements mixed with macabre comedy and superhero tropes, it wasn't long before the comic book got the live-action adaptation treatment. In 1997, a movie version came out with the titular character being played by Michael Jai White and received cult-classic status.

After the movie version, HBO broadcasted an animated series titled "Todd McFarlane's Spawn" which ran for three seasons.

"Spawn" tells the story of a covert government assassin who was killed in a double-cross by his boss. Waking up in Hell, he is offered to go back to Earth but in return, he will have to lead an evil army. The assassin accepts and came back as a twisted, disfigured version of his old self. However, he goes back on his promise of leading an army and starts working for the side of good.

With the resounding success of "Deadpool" in theaters, it's not that hard to think that a resurgence of "Spawn" material should not happen for either film or TV. Just like "Deadpool," the "Spawn" movie could work with a limited budget and will most likely be R-rated. If it spells the same success as "Deadpool," fans can enjoy more "Spawn" material in other mediums too.
