'Supernatural' season 12 spoilers, news: is this the final season for the Winchesters?

The CW joined fans in celebrating Supernatural Day — which is celebrated every 13th day of September — by releasing the season 12 poster and promotional photos.

The new poster showcases Sam and Dean Winchester — played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki — with the angel Castiel/Cas (Misha Collins) and the King of Hell Crowley (Mark Sheppard) in what appears to be a doorway or a portal to "the dark side", reported IGN.

Among the publicity photos released by the network is our first look at Mary Winchester for season 12 after she is brought back from the dead by Amara to fight alongside her boys.

Meanwhile, the longest running supernatural scripted show in the United States is rumored to end after its twelfth season. According to rumors, fans believe that the Winchesters are nearing the end of the road because the series has exhausted all possible storylines from monsters to heaven and hell.

The series was originally envisioned by show creator Eric Kripke to end after a five-season run after Sam prevents the apocalypse from happening by sacrificing himself and trapping Lucifer in the box with Michael.

However, due to the show's strong fanbase, the show picked up from the season 5 finale and explored new mythologies. "Supernatural" then continued its run for another six seasons.

According to the report, the return to the Winchester family dynamic may mean that the show is coming full circle, as it started off with the same concept before Sam and Dean's monster hunting adventures brought them face to face with God and the Darkness.

The post also hinted that the boys and their allies must be very tired of all the fighting. Cas has been in a neverending battle with his brothers since season 5, while Crowley has been remiss in his duties as King of Hell while he's been busy buddying up with the Winchesters.

Before any official statement is released about "Supernatural's" cancellation, fans of the show will be glad to know that it will return to The CW on Thursday, Oct.13., at 9 p.m. EDT.
