'Tempest 4000' release date news: Arcade shooter to drop on PC, PS4, and Xbox One this spring

"Tempest 4000' coming to PS4, PC, and Xbox One this spring of 2018 Steam / Tempest 4000

The time has come for legendary game creator Atari to make a comeback in the modern gaming scene, and it is going to be with "Tempest 4000" -- an arcade shoot 'em up title that packs all the right ingredients that made Atari a standout back in the heydays.

Although Atari has yet to confirm a release date for the upcoming title, "Tempest 4000" now has an official game page on Steam, which reveals that the game will be seeing a release this spring of 2018. However exciting this new development seems to be, the listing does not indicate a specific release date, so players still have to keep a lookout on updates from Atari in the coming weeks.

As a backgrounder, "Tempest 4000" is the modern re-imagining of the Atari classic shooter "Tempest." Interestingly, the project first came about when Atari threatened to sue Llamasoft founder Jeff Minter for creating a clone of the game. But, ultimately, things took a different turn and the next news that come about from the drama is Llamasoft and Atari are teaming up to release a new "Tempest' game.

In this new installment, players will still be controlling the famous spaceship dubbed as the Claw -- a powerful and otherworldly spacecraft that is dead-set in destroying monster creatures that dare to go against it through neon-hued laser beams.

The new game will feature a total of 100 levels and will take players on an almost psychedelic and atmospheric cruise through the unknown space.

In terms of pricing, the game has yet to be given a concrete price point. However, Comicbook.com argues that the game will likely be valued at $19.99 seeing as Atari's target is those who fancy the retro classics similar to what it did with its previous project the "Atari Flashback" series.

Console-wise, the game is slated to see a release on all major platforms such as the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and on PC. It has yet to be shared if Nintendo's hybrid console, the Switch, will be getting a port of the game once the game drops.
