'The Affair' season 3 spoilers: It's 'all about Noah' this year, says Maura Tierney

"The Affair" is due for an emotional comeback this weekend and just before the show premieres, lead star Maura Tierney gives fans a taste of how the third season is going to be.

Picking up three years after the very dramatic plot twist at the end of season 2, fans might think that everyone has put everything in the past and started fresh. Unfortunately, three years is not enough to get rid of the tumultuous history that the characters have experienced in the past two seasons. Making things much more complicated is that of Noah's (Dominic West) release from prison after serving a sentence that was not supposed to be his in the first place.

"This season is all about Noah," Tierney who plays Helen, Noah's ex-wife, told the New York Daily News in a recent chat. "[The writers] made the choice to skip jail. He's been released. As the season progresses, there are more and more flashbacks. His journey in prison gets revealed towards the end of the season."

While the past couple of years may not be enough to forget failed marriages coupled with countless betrayals, it is still quite a long time for all parties involved. The trailer shows Helen still religiously visiting Noah while he is locked up behind bars. Although most inmates would be happy to get visitors regularly, the book author does not fancy the notion of his ex-wife dropping by to check up on him. In fact, he even tells her never to come again.

Meanwhile, in another snippet from presumably a different time, Noah begs Alison (Ruth Wilson) for reconciliation and professes his love to her. But the tables have turned on him as it is now him who is being driven away by his former fiancée.

"It's about our darker impulses as humans and what happens if we follow them," said Tierney, who won a Golden Globe earlier this year for her role in the Showtime original series.

Spoilers for upcoming premiere episode indicate that Noah may latch on to a new love interest as he struggles to settle into his new life. It becomes more complex when he suddenly gets a gut feeling that someone is watching him.

"The Affair" season 3 premieres this Sunday, Nov. 20, 10 p.m. ET.
