A new promo trailer has been released for The Affair season 4 episode 4 and it shows the tension building for Cole and Alison.

The two will be the focus of the next episode as Cole tries to figure out his relationship with her. And it's not only Cole who has lots of thinking to do as Alison is getting increasingly closer to Ben.

According to The Express, the official synopsis for the episode reads: 'Alison and Ben (Ramon Rodriguez) dig into her past and begin confronting her fears.

'Cole's relationship with Alison is jeopardising his marriage to Luisa (Catalina Sandino Moreno).'

The promo reveals the next episode will see some things that are hidden coming out into the open.

In the promo, Alison takes Ben's hand and says to him: 'I haven't told anyone this before, not Cole, not Noah.'

Then there is an intriguing interaction between Cole and Ben that gives the impression they actually know each other and that Cole knows something that Ben hasn't been honest about.

In the clip, Ben says to Cole: 'I'm going to tell her the truth, just give me a moment.'

We didn't see that coming at all and it makes us ask ourselves what kind of connection there might be between these two characters that seemed like strangers in the beginning.

And what truth does he want to share with Alison?

There might be more heartache in store for Alison from another direction too though as another gripping scene in the promo shows Cole speaking with Luisa and he says to her: 'You want me to ask Alison to declare herself an unfit mother?'

Luisa answers 'Yes' and then Cole responds: 'It would break her heart.'

Hopefully we'll get all the answers when episode 4 of The Affair airs on Showtime on Sunday, July 8.
