'The Following' season 4 renewal rumors: New season could have had 'uber-rich' serial killer

It has been almost a year since the final episode of "The Following" aired on Fox, but fans of the show are still looking forward to positive news about a possible renewal of the show in the future.

The horror drama thriller, which starred Kevin Bacon as former FBI agent Ryan Hardy as he captured professor-turned-cult leader and serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), was last seen on air on May 18, 2015. But fans of the series are still clamoring for the show to be back on TV to find out the identity of the new serial killer who took over Carroll's place after his arrest.

In an interview with TVLine in May 2015, co-showrunner Alexi Hawley teased what "The Following" would have looked like if the series was given the chance to return to TV.

According to Hawley, for a fourth season, the writing staff was open to the idea of exploring the true-crime theme of NPR's "Serial" or the documentary on Robert Durst by HBO titled "The Jinx."

The co-showrunner also revealed that the writers' pool of the defunct series talked about the idea of having an extremely rich serial killer to break away from the stereotypical identity of the murderer.

"This idea that the über-rich, except for possibly [alleged murderer and 'Jinx' subject] Robert Durst, don't get caught as serial killers. That can't possibly genetically be that they don't get that gene, that they don't have those proclivities," Hawley shared.

The co-showrunner also mentioned that the fourth season of "The Following" could have possibly dealt with a killer who could be a lot more influential and wealthier compared to Joe, Theo (Michael Ealy) or Strauss (Gregg Henry). But could the show have survived if Mike went after a different killer?
