"The Last Ship" has successfully ended its third season, and the people behind the show are now getting ready for the fourth installment of the action-drama TV series. What's more is that the show is said to add a new face to their cast.

TNT's "The Last Ship" just got renewed for its fourth and fifth installments all thanks to the work of Steve Kane and Hank Steinberg. For its fourth season, fans can expect an overwhelming plot, especially since the finale of the show's third season — titled "Don't Look Back" — that aired back in September left the fans with a lot of unanswered questions.

"The Last Ship's" third season ended with Captain Tom Chandler's (Eric Dane) survival and the death of Tex (John Pyper-Ferguson). The latter caught the bullet that was intended for Tom when Allison (Elisabeth Rohm) tried to kill him. Because of Tex's death, Tom was left feeling guilty knowing that Tex risked his life for him. Because of this, Tom left his high-profile career.

Tom's act of stepping down from his job left fans to speculate that he will be living a new life come season 4. On the other hand, a new character will be joining the crew in season 4, and the character will be named Dr. Paul Vellek.

Dr. Vellek will be played by "Robocop's" Peter Weller. Vellek will come to the show as a world-renowned genetic modification and plant biotechnology specialist that will have a very significant part in the crew's latest mission.

Though fans suspect that Vellek will be replacing the late paleo microbiologist who created the cure for the virus — Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) — he will be playing another crucial role instead.

As of now there is still no official news as to when "The Last Ship" season 4 will be released, but it is speculated to be aired come June 2017.
