The second season of "The Leftovers" will see Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), his girlfriend Nora (Carrie Coon) and his daughter (Margaret Qualley) moving from New York to Jarden, Texas. This is in hopes of starting over in a town supposedly unaffected by the phenomenon that caused the disappearance of a huge number of people all around the world.

In an interview with Variety, series co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta explained how the move will affect the characters and how it offers a fresh start for the show creators as well.

"It was actually pretty liberating to look at the world upside down, at a place that felt somehow blessed by the departure rather than cursed by it," said Perrotta, who wrote the novel of the same name that the show is based on.

For fans of the show, the second season might feel like a reboot, as the first three episodes of season 2 will take on a more supernatural approach.

"We've taken a rather unconventional approach, and [those episodes] are really the introduction to what we're going to do," said Lindelof.

Lindelof said that the move to Texas not only provided the creators inspiration to create new storylines, but it also gave the characters a chance to find peace.

"If we wanted to keep the show in Mapleton, we were resigning ourselves to the fact that these people wanted to stay miserable," he said, adding that for the series, being locked into one location "felt incredibly limiting."

The season 2 premiere will end with a mystery that will set the tone for the rest of season, and the co-creators said that this time, the show will have a more mystical feel to it. The amplified supernatural element will be played out in one of the storylines this season, which will see the return of Guilty Remnant cult leader Patti Levin (Ann Dowd), who died during season 1.

"The Leftovers" season 2 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
