"The Originals" season 4 is still months away from its premiere in early 2017, but it has been confirmed that the show will have a crossover with "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. It is now rumored that Nina Dobrev, who plays Elena Gilbert, will also be crossing over to "The Originals."

According to a report from TV Line, Alaric (Matthew Davis) is so far the only character from "The Vampire Diaries" confirmed to appear on "The Originals" season 4. More specifically, he'll be appearing in episode 8, in which his character Alaric will handing a special relic to Elijah (Daniel Gillies).

However, with Alaric opening the doors for "The Vampire Diaries" characters to appear on "The Originals," it is widely speculated that Elena might appear on the show as well. This may allow the series to reveal her current status as it is still uncertain if Elena will be making an appearance on the finale of "The Vampire Diaries."

Game N Guide reveals that the producers are open to bringing back Nina Dobrev as Elena for the finale episode of "The Vampire Diaries," but the actress has allegedly already shown disinterest, opting instead to move forward with other projects. If she will not be there for the final episode, she might give viewers a proper conclusion to her character's story on "The Originals."

The report also states that other characters from "The Vampire Diaries" are likely to appear in crossover events as well. However, no confirmation has been announced by Nina Dobrev or "The Vampire Diaries" stars Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. If they'll appear in crossover episodes, it may come as a big surprise to audiences.

University Herald reports that if Dobrev does reprise her role, it might not be as the real Elena. Instead, she is speculated to appear solely as a doppelganger.

"The Originals" season 4 premieres this March 17, 2017.
