'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers: when is Elena coming back to Mystic Falls?

Fans of the long-running series "The Vampire Diaries" can't hide their anticipation for its season 8's upcoming episodes where a lot of revelations and surprising twists may occur. The plot continues to thicken and intertwine with previous seasons as the show progresses.

In the recently aired season 8 episode 4, Stefan, played by Paul Wesley, and Matt Davis' character Alaric worked together in order to find the artifact that would explain Sybil's (Nathalie Kelley) origin. However, as previously teased, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) got to it first. Damon's curiosity as to why the item was important to the siren led him to it eventually.

Meanwhile, fans of the show learned about Sybil's backstory and the identity of her sister and second siren, who turned out to be Seline, played by Kristen Gutoskie.

Also worth noting was Joel Gretsch's character Peter Maxwell encountering Damon in the recently aired episode. The vampire's search for the mysterious artifact led to a violent meeting with Peter, where Matt (Zach Roerig) also showed up. It was later on revealed that Peter is actually Matt's (Zach Roerig) father.

The one question on everyone's mind is — when is Elena (Nina Dobrev) coming back to Mystic Falls? As pointed out by a YouTube user, she might just help get Damon's humanity back, considering how topsy-turvy things already are.

Showrunner Julie Plec told Digital Spy that she has prepared two possible endings for the popular vampire drama series, depending on whether or not Dobrev is coming back. Plec mentioned that the only obstacle is logistics, which she does not want the show to fall victim to. She shared that she is hoping to use the ending with Elena in it, otherwise she admitted it would feel incomplete without her.
