'True Detective' season 2 episode 3 'Maybe Tomorrow': Ray survives, Ani is angry and Frank is no longer in command

Ray Velcoro (Colin Ferrell) looked really dead when last week's "True Detective" season 2 episode ended. But for starters, he isn't going anywhere. Fortunately, his time is not up yet as he will be needed in episode 3 titled "Maybe Tomorrow" for Ani (Rachel McAdams) to tell off.

Ray was given a lead by Frank (Vince Vaughn) that led him to the location, a big discovery and a near-death experience. Ferrell believes that his character, who he described in an HBO sneak peek is "stuck in the interminable present" and "genuinely blinded by his past," his trust on Frank pushed him.

"Over time they have grown to trust each other to some degree, and I think that trust becomes more and more apparent - and more real and more experienced - the more the story is told," the actor teased. This is despite their first meeting being "not ideal at all."

In the new "True Detective" season 2 episode, Ani reminds Ray that she is the one in charge of the investigation and under her terms, wandering off and looking for information alone or without her knowledge isn't how she would want other officers on her team to be doing or in Ray's case, be the reason they get killed.

With rage reigning over her, it is unknown if Ani will even pay attention to Ray about a crucial evidence he comes across just before a man in the mask shoots and nearly murders him. But perhaps, this piece of essential knowledge might even pacify the detective and let Ray off the hook.

Meanwhile, in the upcoming "True Detective" season 2 installment, Frank continues his own investigation on the same case and decides to seek the help of his friends, or more accurately, former underlings, in the criminal underworld.

However, he won't be able to rely on them when it comes to taking orders just like how he did before. Clearly, Frank isn't what he was to them anymore. Paul, on the other hand, finds people who might have known or seen the deceased Ben Caspar when he was alive.

"True Detective" season 2 episode 3 "Maybe Tomorrow" airs July 5. Alternatively, it can be watched online through live stream with HBO GO.
