HBO's powerhouse TV series — "True Detective" may still be in limbo as there is no word about its third season. There are even speculations that the show may have been silently canned by the network.

It's a known fact by now that the show's sophomore season raked in a significantly lower number of viewers compared to the critically acclaimed first installment. Adding more salt to injury is Matthew McConaughey's departure after season 1 that could have been one of the reasons for the lackluster second season.

Nonetheless, HBO's president of programming Casey Bloys debunked the cancellation rumors and said that there will still be another season of the show, though it is said that the network will be focusing more on the fairly new project "Westworld" that is now heading towards its second season. That being said, fans of the neo-noir crime drama are likely to be waiting until 2018 before it graces the small screen once again.

Meanwhile, the series' next installment is rumored to be led by a new showrunner. It can be remembered that the first two seasons was helmed by Nic Pizzolatto but he is now reported to be working with Robert Downey Jr. in an upcoming project.

That being said, there is also word on the street suggesting that Downey Jr. will be part of the cast for "True Detective's" yet to be released season, though this has to be taken with a grain of salt as there is no official confirmation yet.

Albeit the show's uncertainty, fans are advised to look forward to future news about "True Detective" season 3.
