Very little is known about the main plot and conflict in the upcoming science-fiction film, "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets." To give fans a little taste of what's to come, the studios have now released several official photos and a teaser trailer to showcase the film's tone, characters, and visual effects.

The trailer focuses on two elements: the two lead characters, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), as well as the main setting of the film, the intergalactic city Alpha.

As noted by the official synopsis (via Deadline), the film is set in the 28th century, and the lead characters are members of a peacekeeping force. They are then sent to Alpha by their commanding officer, played by Clive Owen.

The city is described as a melting pot of different cultures, containing more than 17 million residents coming from all four corners of the galaxy. Alpha is also described as a peaceful place that allows people from different planets to mingle, trade, and form unions with each other.

However, the report reveals that not everyone agrees with this peaceful allegiance in Alpha. It is revealed that an unseen force is working to bring great danger and destroy what Alpha stands for.

Throughout the trailer, the relationship between Valerian and Laureline is also teased. It is revealed that Valerian does not hide that he has feelings for his partner, but she always turns him down. In the trailer, she even tells him that they are only partners when he flirts, and she rejects him every time.

Some clips in the trailer also showcase some of the action set pieces in the film. One showcases Valerian using some sort of gun that creates temporary platforms he can jump on. Another scene shows Valerian and Laureline on top of a moving vehicle inside a tunnel.

"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is set to premiere on July 21, 2017.
