'Wayward Pines' season 2 release date: Renewed or cancelled? Finale episode 10 to answer town's mysteries

Carla Gugino as Kate Hewson in Wayward Pines Episode 10 Fox

While a lot of fans are hoping to see a second season of M. Night Shyamalan's hit TV thriller "Wayward Pines," FOX Network already confirmed that the show's 10th episode will be the last for the series.

The series, based on the novels with the same title written by Blake Crouch, earned a huge following because of the favorable response from critics. Fans were also hooked on the highly interesting plot, which is both eerie and strange at the same time.

But while "Wayward Pines" enjoyed decent ratings throughout its past nine episodes, the network decided not to order another season even if series creator Chad Hodge earlier claimed in an interview with Variety that creating a second season is highly possible.

"As TV lover, things that are limited series, I'm more willing to engage with them and commit to them because I know I'm going to get answers and reveals and be on the edge of my seat and then 10 episodes later, I'll feel like there was a beginning, middle and an end," Hodge said. "And then, should it do so well that, you know, Fox wants to do a second season, there's absolutely an opening for that, storytelling wise."

The producers of the show promised to provide all the answers that have been bothering the viewers since the season premiere.

"Wayward Pines" fans should also expect to see how Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) and Kate (Carla Gugino) will save the residents of the mysterious Idaho town from the invasion of the "abbies" after David Pilcher (Toby Jones) decided to shut down the town's electricity to prevent Ethan from broadcasting the truth.

They will also find out where Nurse Pam Pilcher's (Melissa Leo) loyalty lies after she encouraged Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon) to push through with her investigation regarding the unexplained Plot 33, even if every circumstance in Wayward Pines were caused by her brother.

Young actor Charlie Tahan, who portrays the role of Ethan's son Ben, also gave hints about how the series will culminate in the soon-to-be released episode 10 titled "Cycle."

"The electric fence is what keeps the people of Wayward Pines in and keeps the abbies out. When the power goes out, the fence goes down, and the abbies are free to come in as they please. [There's] a lot of gunfire, a lot of abbies, not too many survivors," Tahan said.

The "Wayward Pines" finale airs on Thursday, July 23.
