The year of faith-based films continues with the upcoming release of "Wayward: The Prodigal Son" – based on the popular biblical parable of a lost child returning home.

The film "tells the story of Tyler McMillan, a pampered rich kid who gets it all and almost loses everything, including his own life," a press release read. Tyler's father's last wish is for his rebellious son to return to him once again.

Cedar Fort Entertainment announced Tuesday that "Wayward" will be released on November 7 in over 25 select theatres across the United States. It stars Landon Henneman as Tyler, and Rob Diamond as Robert McMillan, Tyler's father.

Diamond – who also wrote, directed, and produced the inspirational film – discussed why the "Prodigal Son" parable resonated with him.

"I made 'Wayward: The Prodigal Son' because the Biblical story has always touched a deep place in my soul," he said. "I have been on the receiving end of forgiveness many times for the mistakes I've made in my life. It's the perfect story of love, redemption and forgiveness."

The release of "Wayward" follows the success of faith-based films such as "Heaven is for Real," "Son of God," and "God's Not Dead." Diamond said that he created "Wayward" for "my Maker first and foremost," but that the film will touch a broad audience.

"I also made it for anyone who loves stories of redemption and for those seeking some hope and forgiveness in their lives or the lives of the people they cherish most who might be hurting inside," he explained.

Cedar Fort acquisition manager Spencer Harden also emphasised the relatability of the film.

"We all know someone who has gone astray," he said in a statement. "Every parent hopes it won't happen to their child, but they grow up with minds of their own."
