Why does God in the Old Testament condone killing and violence?

There are some parts of the Bible that are difficult to read.  Some people find what God commands and condones in the Old Testament particularly hard to accept, such as the violence and slaughtering unbelieving enemies like the Canaanites.  Apologist Ruth Wilson explains what's really going on and why it's not incompatible with the God we know to be loving.
