
While one of advantages of running Microsoft's Windows 10 platform will be a unified interface across different devices possessing a varied screen size, the upcoming operating system will also be able to support a variety of resolutions for mobile and desktop products. During the WinHEC conference, which was held last week, tech giant Microsoft was able to summarize the minimum and maximum resolutions that Windows 10 would be able to support. It has now been revealed that systems running the advanced platform will be able to support the 8K resolution, assuming the resolution is supported by that particular product.
Given below is a summary of products, their screen sizes and the maximum resolution that they can support:
- 6 inch+ phones and tablets screens: 4K
- 8 inch+ plus tablets and computers: 4K
- 27 inch and higher monitors: 8K
Microsoft will be looking to rectify the mistakes that it had made with its Windows 8 operating system. After the company released the aforementioned platform, it was thoroughly criticized due to its poor support for 4K resolutions. While 8K might seem impractical for an abundant number of consumers, its biggest advantage will be presented to PC gamers, who will be able to immerse in future gaming titles.
While current graphic processors are unable to provide suitable frame rates to game comfortably on 4K resolutions, improved GPU architecture coupled with Microsoft's upcoming API, DirectX 12 will mitigate these performance limitations, allowing gamers to get a satisfactory experience from future video gaming titles.
Even though 4K has yet to become commercially popular as compared to the 1080 and 1440p resolutions, Microsoft will be looking to come prepared by optimizing Windows 10 for 4K. The platform will be providing support for the 4K video codec HEVC, or High Efficiency Video Coding, or in simpler terms, H.265.
Windows 10 is expected to be released during Q3, 2015.
