As a step-up flagship, it is said that the Xiaomi Mi 5s will have improvements and new features, including the newest ultrasonic fingerprint scanner from Qualcomm.
According to Fone Arena, a Weibo post out of China reportedly leaks that Xiaomi plans to use the new Qualcomm Sense ID technology for its upcoming Mi 5s iteration. In addition, the new fingerprint scanner will be placed somewhere else as the supposed leak also "confirms" that Xiaomi will do away with the home button for the new flagship. With the new Sense ID, this seems highly likely. The new Qualcomm technology makes it possible for the sensor to have an ultrasonic performance. In addition, this may mean that the fingerprint scanner for the new Mi 5s could possibly be integrated into the display since the new Qualcomm tech makes the Sense ID scanner work through a number of different surfaces, including glass.
Meanwhile, aside from the new Sense ID ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, the Mi 5s is looking to be one of the top-tier flagships once it is released. Purported specs for the new iteration include the step-up Snapdragon 821 processor paired with 6 GB of RAM. Another interesting rumor is that Xiaomi will place the Mi 5s as its premium smartphone offering, as the new iteration will have 256 GB of onboard storage. It is unclear, however, if Xiaomi will also come out with other storage configurations for the Mi 5s.
The rest of the specs are also top-notch. The new Mi 5 s will have a similar 5.15-inch display as the base model, as well as the full HD resolution for the screen. However, there will be additional features for the Mi 5s. The upcoming flagship is supposed to come out with a pressure-sensitive display that will give 3D Touch-like options. The pressure-sensitive display dovetails with the fingerprint scanner rumor, particularly if Xiaomi will feature the sensor right underneath the display glass.
