2019 Ford Mustang GT California Special is a modern take on a nostalgic car

Ford returns with another nostalgia-inducing muscle car in the 2019 Ford Mustang GT California Special. Even though the new California Special is a reincarnation of the 1968 California Special Mustang, it sports a number of updates and upgrades on both the inside and the outside.

First, Ford came out with the new Mustang Bullitt for the 50th anniversary of the 1968 thriller "Bullitt," which starred Steve McQueen. The automaker seems intent on continuing this trip down memory lane with the new 2019 Ford Mustang GT California Special. The original California Special is a classic muscle car known for its unique, distinctive style.

The 2019 Mustang GT California Special seeks to continue this visual distinctiveness. The reincarnation of the classic car has an open custom grille, a set of five-spoke wheels unique to the model, and fading side stripes that are now along the midsection of the door rather than on the bottom.

Of course, the GT would not be complete without the "California Special" badge that marks the car's distinctiveness from other Mustangs. The seats are also trimmed with Miko suede and stamped with the "GT/CS" badge as well.

Ford also announced that the model will come in two hues: Velocity Blue and Need for Green.

While the California Special is visually distinctive, under the hood, it is as powerful as all the contemporary Mustang GT models. All of the manual 2019 Mustang GT cars can have rev-matching, which allows smooth downshifts without the work. Opting for the Performance Package can give drivers the EcoBoost option, which allows drivers the choice of making their exhaust loud or silent, depending on their surroundings or other considerations.

Buyers have other options as well, including the Bang & Olufsen PLAY audio system, which includes a 10-channel amplifier and 12 speakers. The audio system can also be compatible with Apple CarPlay if buyers opt for the SYNC 3 system as well.

The 2019 Mustang GT California Special has more in common with the 2019 Bullitt, other than the two models being nostalgic reincarnations of classic cars. Both cars, after all, are powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 460 horsepower.

Ford has not released prices yet for the 2019 Mustang GT California Special, but units will reportedly become available this summer.
