'Avatar 2' movie update: James Cameron delays release date to 2017

Latest reports say that seasoned director James Cameron pushed back the release date of the "Avatar" sequel to 2017 as he and the rest of the team need more time in writing the scripts.

After the famous "Titanic" and "Avatar" director confirmed that he is working on an "Avatar" trilogy, Cameron is now working with a team of screenwriters in cooking up the future films. A sequel is only natural since "Avatar" is one of the highest grossing films of all time.

Cameron told the press that creating the sequel is a big challenge and will need time, justifying the delay in the release date from December 2016 to 2017.

"There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film. [My team and I are] writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments," Cameron told ABC.

Some reports are saying that too much delay and the audience may lose interest. However, that's quite hard to imagine, knowing that Cameron pushes the boundaries for every movie he makes. Moving the screening date seems to be a wise move though, since it would avoid clashing with other movies such Lucas Films' "Star Wars" spinoff and the rumored "Assassin's Creed" movie adaptation.

As for release dates, "Avatar 2" is now scheduled for a late 2017 screening, while "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4" are pegged for the next two years after. More information will be known as the production of the film is underway anytime soon.
